Premier's son uses 'superstar' lawyer
WHEN Premier Ewart Brown's son stands trial for 33 counts of molestation, as he was ordered to do by a California court this week, he will be represented by a lawyer with well-documented experience of high-profile "celebrity" clients.
Dr. Kevin Brown's defence lawyer is Blair Berk, a Harvard Law School-educated Los Angeles attorney with a reputation for defending the rich and famous, often in drunk-driving cases.
Ms Berk was hired by Hollywood star Mel Gibson following his infamous drunken anti-Jewish tirade against arresting officers in 2006. She has also worked with troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan after her arrest on drunk under the influence and cocaine charges in 2007, as well as representing fellow tabloid mainstays Britney Spears and Nicole Richie.
Ms Berk has also come to the aid of celebrities Kiefer Sutherland, Halle Berry and Ozzy Osbourne.
In recent years, Ms Berk has built a reputation as a "miracle worker", in the words of Los Angeles blog Thirty Mile Zone.
ABC News called Ms Berk a "superstar" in a 2006 profile.
"When celebrities in Hollywood get in trouble, they go to Blair Berk," the US broadcaster said.
The Wall Street Journal's law blog described Ms Berk as being on a "short list of lawyers to call for Hollywood types who find themselves in hot water".
Dr. Kevin Brown (pictured) was ordered to stand trial on Wednesday after preliminary hearings, and faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted. The decision came a week after testimony by 12 women, including a 15-year-old girl and an undercover vice cop, that the Premier's son inappropriately touched them.
He pleaded not guilty to 33 felony sex counts and will appear for arraignment on February 25.
