Darrell leaps into CAC squad
Fit-again Latroya Darrell finished fourth in the high jump for the University of Georgia at the Kentucky Invitational over the weekend to qualify for the CAC Games.
The daughter of former Bermuda boxer Troy Darrell will now represent the Island at the Games in Puerto Rico this summer.
Darrell, who cleared 1.73 metres at the Kentucky meet, has overcame a serious illness that kept her out of competition for a long spell. She is now being closely watched by Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson who said she was pleased with the 21-year-old.
"I am quite excited with Latroya's recent performance," said Watson. "Latroya was one of our consistent medallists at the Carifta Games in high jump and triple jump and was tagged as one of our elite athletes.
"We are all excited that Latroya is now back and able to compete at the level where she left off.
"We are looking for great things this year from Latroya and now that she is in such a track oriented university she can only improve. I am positive that Latroya will also qualify for the Commonwealth Games and go on to represent Bermuda in the London Olympics in 2012.
"She is a very tough competitor, she works very hard in training and is very committed to this sport.
"Now that she is back to full health our expectations of Latroya are very high."
Aaron Evans, in his first indoor track meet for University of Georgia, also produced an outstanding performance, winning his 800 metre event in a time of one minute, 50.65 seconds.
Evans has already qualified for the CAC Games and the Commonwealth Games, which will be held later this year in New Delhi, India.
Jasmine Brunson also competed over the weekend for Clemson University and placed 11th in the triple jump, which is not her main event, with a leap of 11.76 metres that qualifies her for the 'B' standard for Carifta.
