The company's president, Mr. Brian Alkon, his wife, chairman, Mrs. Maxine Alkon and general manager, Mr. Jon Feldman recently incorporated Island Protection as a limited liability company.

Mr.a Alkon, whose Bermudian wife owns seven local companies, said he decided to incorporate the company in order to protect the couple's other business interests.

"We were lackadaisical about incorporating. But, it's good business sense to have a limited liability company in case anyone comes after the assets of the other businesses,'' said Mr. Alkon. The company had been operating as a division of Mermaid Beach Club, since its inception in February.

"It's doing very well,'' said Mr. Alkon. "So far we have installed our system in 110 homes. "We would only rehouse the security business if it grows or if we want to move into a different division, like security guards for instance. The advantage now is the company has no overheads,'' said Mr. Alkon.

The company's security system provides smoke and gas sensors, water detectors in basements, burglar alarms, medical emergency alarms and motion detectors.

The system checks all zones once an hour and also checks that batteries are in working order.

Customers purchase the system and pay a monthly monitoring fee. The Alkons are part owners in a security company in New Jersey and Pennsylvannia. They are incorporating another security firm to service the security needs of the US Virgin Islands.

Island Protection is being promoted by telemarketing. Five staff are employed part-time to sell the security system in Bermuda.

Ms Carmen Butterfield is the office manager.

The Alkons also own a property company, construction company and two catering companies.

"Anywhere else in the world it would be considered strange that a security company was located in a hotel, but not in Bermuda, where there is so much diversity. Bermudians are often involved in a variety of businesses,'' said Mr. Alkon.
