Road death site to be made safer

The entrance and exit to Paget Plaza will be switched around on November 7 after a visitor was killed leaving the parking lot this month.

Visitor Rosemary Bigelow, 50, of Pennsylvania, was killed when her rental scooter collided with a tractor trailer as she was leaving Paget Plaza on Middle Road on October 2.

Following the fatal accident, Ward Young, chairman of Bermuda Drug Company Ltd., which is a part owner of Paget Plaza, said he met with the Ministry of Works and Engineering to discuss ways to make the exit safer and it was agreed to swap the entrance and exit.

?I think going out of the current exit and making a right turn is difficult,? Mr. Young said yesterday.

He explained that as drivers look right it is hard to see traffic coming from the left because of the turn in the road.

Mr. Young, who said changing the entrance and exit had been in the back of his mind for a long time, said no construction will be needed to make the change. New signs will be erected by Works and Engineering that will make it clear which way to enter and exit the Plaza.

Mr. Young said two other options are being discussed to make driving in the area safer.

A hedge at the current exit could be trimmed back and Mr. Young said he is looking into cutting back an embankment to create a better view of the road. The embankment is a piece of natural rock in between the sidewalk and wall of the Paget Plaza building, he said.

Another option being explored is making the current exit a left turn only.

However, at the moment the only change that will be made is the swap of the entrance and exit.

The change in traffic flow into Paget Plaza will be advertised in with a map to make the change very clear for the public, said Mr. Young.

Opposition Leader and Paget East MP Grant Gibbons said of the switch: ?Anything that makes that safer is a step forward.?

Resident of the area, Eric Benevides, who frequents the Plaza, said: ?I am more than happy about the switch.

?It is long overdue and should have never been that way in the first place.?

He added that he has had many close calls when turning right out of the Plaza.
