Johnte hits target against star-studded Fulham reserves
Jonte Smith downplayed his superb cameo display against a formidable Fulham XI boasting several Premier League players at the Cottagers’ Motspur Park training ground yesterday. The Bermudian striker took only seconds to extend his overall goal scoring tally for the season to 16 after coming on as a late substitute in Crawley Town Reserves’ 3-1 come-from-behind win.Smith, 17, netted his second goal in as many outings after capitalising on some sloppy defending by a Fulham squad that included Welsh international Simon Davies and Portuguese striker Orlando Sa.Yet rather than get all caught up in the moment, the flourishing footballer chose to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground.“I had a decent performance overall but still looking to improve on certain aspects of my game,” Smith told The Royal Gazette. With the teams deadlocked at 1-1, Smith leapt from the bench to score the eventual game winner.“Surprisingly I scored my goal 20 seconds after I had come onto the pitch,” he said. “I came on with about 20 minutes to go when the score was at 1-1.“I had scrapped with the defender and came out on top with the ball and had dribbled through to be one-on-one with the keeper. I just sent the keeper the wrong way and slotted the ball into the far corner.”Smith said it was an honour to have measured up against quality players with top flight experience under their belt such as Davies.“I feel privileged to have played against players who have made appearances for Fulham in the Premier League this season,” he added. “When you get to see them first hand and actually play against them you really get to see the difference in the quality of football and the amount of ability these players actually have.“I was definitely excited when I got the call to play for the reserves away to a team as Fulham and pleased to have reached 16 goals for the season so far, which includes two goals for the reserves.”Smith was one of four youth level players who made an appearance in yesterday’s friendly.“It was an excellent victory and performance against a strong Fulham side,” Crawley assistant manager Paul Raynor commented on the club’s official website.“Guys like Micheal Kuipers, Ben Smith, Glenn Wilson and our three scorers all got valuable match time and we finished the game with four youth team players on the pitch, Jonte, Jack Eden, Louis John and Nathan Daly, which was another encouraging sign.”Smith was also on target for Crawley Town Under-18s in last weekend’s 2-2 away draw with Southend United.
