Students and parents are to hear first hand about the pain caused by the latest tragic murder on the Island when the victim's mother speaks to schools tomorrow.

Marsha Jones, whose son Shaundae was shot to death in Dockyard last Sunday, will attend Dellwood Middle School and Berkeley Institute in the morning to express her grief and explain how violence had affected her life.

Musician Shine Hayward organised the visits after hearing Ms Jones' comments in the media this week.

He said: "I felt very impressed with her presentation and I admired her courage. But I thought that by speaking through the news, she was probably preaching to the converted. The ones who needed to hear what she had to say don't sit in front of the TV.

"I thought this was an opportunity for her to turn a negative situation into a positive one. We want the students, and their parents, to feel the pain that can be inflicted on to mothers and we want them to realise it could happen to them."

Ms Jones will be speaking to students and parents at Dellwood first, followed by students at Berkeley Institute.

Each seminar will last about 30 minutes as Mr. Hayward said he thought it best all round that they be short and to the point.

He added: "I have arranged this from a concern for Bermuda perspective, and concern for the community. Of course, we all want this (violence) to stop. We all need to look for ways that might encourage or bring us some sort of closure to this."

Ms Jones said talking about what happened to her only child at the weekend helped her to deal with the situation, and she said she believed talking to students now might be easier than later on, after the funeral.

"I want to reach out to these children and see if they can take something positive from it," she added. "I know somebody will hear me, even if it's just one. I get my strength from talking about it, so it will also help me."
