A positive first week, heavy on exercise with minimal disciplinary issues, has been reported for this year’s Bermuda Regiment recruits.“There were no major flare-ups, other than what comes with the territory,” Captain Kenji Bean told The Royal Gazette last night, as the mixture of conscripts and volunteers enjoyed a welcome break from their two weeks at boot camp.Recruits alike got a short leave for “some home-cooked food and down time”.“The recruits, from what I understand, are loving it,” Capt Bean said. “They’ve enjoyed their drills and they got their first shooting time on Friday, although some were a little apprehensive. They’re looking forward to firing again on Tuesday.”The recruits are headed today to the former Naval Annex at Morgan’s Point for overnight training.Capt Bean said a few recruits had been discharged so far for “medical or other” reasons. The only major injury has been a broken ankle. The 2012 recruit camp, which took in 84 men and women on January 15, comes to an end on Sunday.“We will have the final drill competition, which is the culmination of the camp, on Saturday,” Capt Bean said.Useful website:www.bermudaregiment.bm.
