Reclaiming Bermuda
Reclaiming BermudaMay 10, 2011Dear Sir,Bermuda, we have a problem. The folks running our precious Island home cannot seem to decide whether to go left or right, north or south or up or down, and, as a result, nothing, and I mean nothing of importance, is getting done. There is talk about this and that, and of promises of what will be in the future, and all that it amounts to is more talk followed by less results. Maybe that is what our Government is referring to when it uses the great adage “do more with less” as all that seems to be happening is more talk with less results.Actually, they’ve done it to themselves and they now find themselves in a quandary, caught between a rock and a hard place. They make laws that actually are reasonable so as to appease the majority of right-thinking people in Bermuda, however, they seem unwilling to enforce them as enforcement will likely have a negative impact on their popularity. Here’s another great adage for our Government to think about — try to please all the people and you will please none.I think we should provide our Government with the urgent help they seem to be crying out for. Unless they get on with the job of turning this country around with some real and immediate results, we should do them, and us, a favour and fire them from the job we gave them and which they are quite clearly proving they cannot do. Underperformers must be removed, otherwise the entire organisation will suffer which, in this case, is our precious Island home.We are at risk of losing our precious Island home. I’m tired of the mess with the tourists up in Dockyard, I’m fed up with the gun violence and having to lock my car doors when I’m driving. The soft approach taken in the schools, in the courts and in the prisons must be reversed as it only serves to promote bad behaviour that, once embedded in our society, will be difficult to reverse. Sadly, we may already be too late to reverse it, however, we certainly cannot afford to wait any longer to start work on reversing it.We are Government’s employers and it is time our employees delivered better results or they should be fired. Our employees need to perform or they should get up and get out. It is time for the good folks of Bermuda to reclaim Bermuda.EHTHamilton Parish
