Buses off the road tomorrow

Buses will stop running between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. tomorrow while drivers attend a union meeting.

Acting Director of Public Transportation Stephen Outerbridge apologised for any inconvenience.

Harbour Nights start

The Chamber of Commerce's Harbour Nights festival will get underway on April 30.

The Wednesday night festival will last until October 8 and early registration is on April 16. Those considering opening a stall should visit the Chamber of Commerce to get details and to receive an application form.

Events include a talent show on the opening week featuring dancers and musicians among many others. On the second week, a steel pan band will be performing. The train will also make an appearance this year.

And a wide variety of crafts will be displayed by local candle makers, knitters, artists and jewellers.

Arts Festival starts

The Spring Into the Arts festival began last night and runs until next week Tuesday.

The organisers promise that there will be a display of visual art from local schools at each site commencing at 6.30 p.m. with the performances beginning at 7.00 p.m. sharp.

Local school students, community artists and performers will sing, dance, act, recite poetry and play musical instruments.

They will be at Spice Valley Middle School tonight, Sandys Secondary Middle School tomorrow night, Whitney Institute Middle School next Monday and Clearwater Middle School on Tuesday night.

All Spring Into the Arts performances are family events and admission is free.

Economy meeting

The Bermuda College will host a panel discussion on the economy on April 21, at the North Hall Lecture Theatre beginning at 7 p.m.

The discussion will attempt to answer questions such as: "How much control should a government exercise over the lives of its people?" and "How relevant is Bermuda's motto 'Quo Fata Ferunt' in today's consumer-driven society?"

Panelists include Robert Stewart, author of the recently published "Guide to the Economy of Bermuda"; Craig Simmons, senior lecturer in economics at Bermuda College; Sen. Calvin Smith, Government spokesperson for Tourism in the Upper House; and Barbara Tannock, adjunct lecturer in Finance at Bermuda College. Hosting the panel is the Faculty Association of the Bermuda College.

Time to license boats

Police have reminded mariners to make sure their boats are re-licensed and equipped with the right licence sticker after the deadline passed last week.

A Police spokesman said all boats should have been re-registered by January 1, and, as of April 1, all boats should display a black and white decal on the starboard side of the vessel.

If boat owners have not received a decal they should contact Marine and Ports for a letter to be used until a decal can be obtained.

Hotel wins web prize

Fairmont Hotels have again won an international prize from marketing leaders for having the most effective website.

The group, which owns the Fairmont Southampton and Hamilton Princess hotels, picked up the Gold Award from the Association of Travel Marketing Executives in New York earlier this month.

The company said the award "further cements Fairmont's industry dominance in the digital marketplace".
