Man jailed for missing court

A man with a history of mental health problems has been in jail since Monday after Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves jailed him for missing court.

Mr. Greaves said that Shannon Looby, 34, of no fixed abode, needed a mental health report, before sentencing him to a week in prison on a probation officer?s recommendation.

The probation officer said Looby was not complying with the staff or taking part in the programmes at St. Brendan?s Hospital.

She also said that Looby had also tested positive for marijuana.

Looby was in trouble with Mr. Greaves for not appearing in Court last Friday.

But Looby said the medications he was taking were making him feel ill.

?Did you come to Court?? Mr. Greaves asked.

?No. Yes. My stomach was loose,? Looby said.

?You left and did what?? Mr. Greaves asked.

?I left and used the bathroom. I had burning sensations.?

The probation officer also said that Looby had been seen on Court Street last Friday after Review Court.

?There must be more bathrooms on Court Street,? Mr. Greaves said.

He told Looby that it was a most unfortunate time to be sick just before a court appearance.

?You need a nice week?s relaxation. You look tired,? Mr. Greaves said as he sent him to Westgate.

Visitor denies possession of heroin

An Englishman who was caught with heroin he intended to supply was remanded in custody in Magistrates? Court on Tuesday until his next court appearance.

Meyrick Desmond Patrick, 45, of Kentworth Court, Birmingham was caught with over 100 grams of diamorphine in St. George?s last Thursday, Crown counsel Shakira Dill said.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves said Patrick was not required to enter a plea yesterday as his case was so serious, it had to be heard in the Supreme Court.

Patrick?s lawyer, Larry Scott made no application for bail.

Patrick will appear for mention in Magistrates? Court again in a week?s time.

$1,500 fine for drugs possession

A Pembroke man who admitted to possessing cocaine and cannabis was given one month to pay his $1,500 fine in Magistrates? Court on Tuesday.

Marco Lovell, 25, of Kings Court, Pembroke, admitted to being in possession of the drugs on two separate occasions in St. George?s in November, 2002 and in January, 2003.

He was fined $750 for the carrying 0.15 grams of cocaine outside Freddies Pub on the Square.

Lovell was also fined $750 for admitting to having 0.47 grams of cannabis in King?s Square.

Man jailed for drug pipe possession

A Paget man was ordered to pay $500 ? or spend 60 days in prison ? in Magistrates? Court on Tuesday after Police found drug paraphernalia in his jacket.

Police arrested Alexander Ming, 47, of Ord Road, after they found a pipe in his jacket as he sat on a bicycle on Tribe Road in November, 2003.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves reminded Ming of his long conviction record and ordered him to pay the fine immediately in court this week.

But Ming was unable to pay and will spend the next 60 days in Westgate.

Boater fined after marine rescue

A Warwick man was fined $140 in Magistrates? Court on Tuesday for not having a VHF radio in his boat.

After a day of fishing in February, Deon Jay Young, 34, of Cedar Hill, Warwick, had to be rescued by Marine Police when his 21-foot powerboat broke down.

Young said he left the radio at home and attempted to retrieve it before the boat?s engine gave out.
