Hopes are high ? but winds threaten Boat Parade

Trouble is brewing on the horizon for the third attempt at the annual Boat Parade with gale force winds and heavy rain expected tomorrow, the Bermuda Weather Service said yesterday.

James Morrison of the Bermuda Weather Service said yesterday: ?Computer model data shows it is looking to be pretty windy on Sunday.

?They all show close to gale force winds from 20 to 25 knots and with possibly gale force winds (over 35 knots) in the evening.?

The Boat Parade, which has become a Christmas tradition for many on the Island was cancelled twice last weekend, on Saturday and Sunday due to gale force winds and rain.

Boat Parade organiser Ian Coles told last Sunday: ?There were problems with holding the parade on Saturday, December 18, he said. But Sunday was wide open.?

Should bad weather force a cancellation again, however, ?that will probably be it for the Boat Parade this year,? Mr. Coles admitted.

It is difficult to hold the parade during the week, with participants needing time to set their boats up, he explained.

Hopes are high for the parade, fireworks and all, to go ahead on Sunday, starting at 6.30 p.m.

And Mr. Coles said a whopping 62 floating light-shows had entered with ?one or two more picked up over the next week?.

?We expect the vast majority to still be there,? he said last week.

Weatherman Morrison predicted: ?More than likely it will just be gusting in the evening time and continue overnight into Monday. We are expecting rain and heavy showers based on the current computer models we have.

?The models all agree as far as Sunday goes. It all depends on the timing ? when it is going to arrive ? the system has not even formed yet.?
