Grand Masters put on a show at chess meet

There were some nail-biting moments among Grand Masters and spectators alike during the first day of the 11th Bermuda International Invitational tournament on Sunday as players ran into time trouble and one of the three games ended in a draw.

The much anticipated game between Brazilian Grand Master Giovanni Vescovi and Indian Grand Master Pentala Harikrishna ended in a draw, while Cuba?s Olympian Grand Master, Lenier Dominguez, beat 18-year-old Andrei Volokitin, a Grand Master from the Ukraine.

Israeli Grand Master Boris Gelfand beat 21-year-old Polish Grand Master Bartlomiej Macieja.

The players sit down again this week at Harmony Club where they?ll compete until February 9.

Later this month the Bermuda International Open takes place at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel from February 11 to 13 and is open to all chess enthusiasts who feel they might have what it takes to win. Players may even find themselves competing against Grand Masters like Dominguez and Vescovi.
