A Subaru car was westbound on North Shore just east of Barker's Hill in Devonshire at about 3 a.m. when the driver lost control, a Police spokesman said yesterday.

The car struck the curb on the north side of the road, then slammed into some trees and caught fire, he said.

The driver, a 26-year-old Pembroke man, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with a broken right leg. The passenger, a 21-year-old Pembroke man, broke his ankle. There was no indication on the Police report that the men suffered burns, the spokesman said.

It is believed passing motorists helped the men from the car.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 3.04 a.m. and found the car "completely engulfed'', a Bermuda Fire Service spokesman told The Royal Gazette . The trees were also burning, he said.

The car was described as "a complete write-off.'' MISSILES THROWN AT POLICE CARS CRM Missiles thrown at Police cars Two Police cruisers had their windscreens smashed when they were attacked by missiles early yesterday morning.

The two cars were on Angle Street at about 3.15 a.m., on their way to a call when the front windscreen of one and the rear windscreen of the other were shattered, a Police spokesman said.

Officers in the cars were not injured, he said.

There were no immediate suspects and the objects thrown at the cars were not found, he said.

Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess introduced this in a piece of legislation called the Road Traffic (Approved Instrument) Order 1995 which was approved in the House on Friday.

Mr. Burgess said the present equipment has been in use since 1990 but it was being discontinued because the manufacturer was about to stop making it.

Consequently there would be no where to get spare parts to fix the models the Police currently use.

The Police will be using the Datamaster breath analyser which will be as accurate.

Shadow Minister Mr. Dennis Lister said the PLP supported the move to update the technology.

The motion was passed.

ROADS AFFECTED BY CONSTRUCTION TFC Roads affected by construction The following roadways will be affected by construction work or repairs this week: Hamilton Parish : Traffic lights will be used on South Shore Road east of Leamington Caves as Telco trenching work is conducted. Motorists are advised to take care when passing. The work is scheduled for completion by mid-April.

Paget : Road crews will direct traffic on Middle Road near Four Ways Inn while sidewalk construction is under way. Motorists are advised to expect delays.

Pembroke : Cemetery Road will be closed to traffic tomorrow for the installation of two new generators by Belco. The work is expected to continue until March 23.

Southampton : Road work will continue near Scenic Heights on Middle Road.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

St. George's : Road crews will direct traffic on Kindley Field Road as it is being resurfaced this week. Work will begin daily at 9 a.m.

Warwick : Works and Engineering staff will be directing traffic in the area where Harbour Road ends and Burnt House Hill begins as the construction of sidewalks continues.
