Maria Annelise Brinkman was searched on her arrival at the Civil Air Terminal on Sunday.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant told the court a plastic bag containing two brown cubes of cannabis resin weighing 3.84 grams was discovered concealed in her trouser leg.

Mr. Mark Pettingill, representing Brinkman, said she had visited Bermuda many times and was friendly with a number of prominent Bermudians of very good standing.

He said Brinkman, mother of a 10-year-old child, had a clean record and was not a drug user. She claimed she had been given the drugs at a party before she left home, he said.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis fined her $500.

MOTORIST CHASED DOWN, ARRESTED CTS Motorist chased down, arrested Police arrested a 40-year-old Sandys Parish man for impaired driving after he failed to stop at the scene of an accident in which he was involved.

The "hit-and-run'' accident took place on Thursday evening on the South Road in Southampton.

Police said the accident involved two cars which were travelling in opposite directions.

The 40-year-old driver drove off without stopping, Police said, and the driver of the other car followed it and used his mobile telephone to call the Police.

As a result, Police were able to locate the first car -- which was travelling on Somerset Road, Sandys -- within minutes.

They stopped the car and arrested the driver. Inquiries are continuing.

DRINKING `LEADING CAUSE' OF CRASHES CTS Drinking `leading cause' of crashes A 30-year-old man was fined $450 and disqualified from driving for a year after pleading guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while impaired.

Motorcycle rider Carlton Smith, of Morgans Road, Warwick, was involved in a collision with a car near the junction of Scenic Heights Pass on Horseshoe Road.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said when Police arrived on the scene, they noticed that Smith was unsteady on his feet and his eyes were glazed.

They asked Smith if he had been drinking. And he replied: "I had a few Guiness.'' Breath samples taken at Hamilton Police Station showed that Smith had 199 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.

"Excess alcohol is the greatest cause of road accidents,'' Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis said before fining Smith and imposing the driving ban.

BEWARED OF CHEAP LIQUOR FOR SALE CRM Beware of cheap liquor for sale Police yesterday urged the public to beware of anyone selling liquor at "suspiciously low'' prices after intruders broke into a South Shore Road, Paget guest accommodation and stole "a large quantity'' of assorted liquor.

Police did not provide the value of the liquor. But they said it was "substantial''.

And they stressed that anyone who knew of someone selling liquor at "suspiciously low prices'' or through unauthorised outlets should report it.

MAN FOUND LYING IN ALLEYWAY CTS Man found lying in alleyway A 37-year-old-man admitted in Magistrates' Court yesterday to being drunk and incapable on Front Street.

Michael Whelan of Paget was discovered by Police on March 24 lying in an alley between Astwood Cycles and Makin' Waves.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said Whelan was unable to stand up and smelled strongly of intoxicants.

Whelan apologised to the court before he was fined $100 by Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis.
