Trojans seek a return to glory days

Goalscorer Damon Swan (left) celebrates a goal for the Bermuda Under17s with team-mate Robert Richardson. Swan is seen as one of Somerset Trojans' brightest prospects.

When Somerset's Tori Davis rifled home his team's fourth goal against Dandy Town to send the Trojans to the top of the table on Sunday it got many people asking the question: Are Mark Trott's men for real?

Visibly lacking imagination up front during the opening half, Trojans stormed back out onto the pitch a different bunch after the restart and put on an attacking display rarely witnessed at the club's hallowed ground since the glorious 70s, 80s and early 90s.

It was a decade ago when the Silver City last savoured FA Cup, Martonmere Cup and two Dudley Eve titles.

Failing to capitalise on these accomplishments, the club descended into an abyss, one which saw them relegated twice - the only occasions in the club's illustrious history.

Painstakingly, Trojans are regaining some of the magic which they formerly possessed, a fact that few who witnessed the victory over Town - a long time nemesis - would disagree with.

Trojans also have tremendous depth and in Marvin Belboda and Damon Ming two of the Island's finest players.

It is only a matter of time before Dion Stovell hits top stride while strike partner McLee Smith is still adjusting to life on Cricket Lane. Striker Dwight Basden is still recovering from injury while Curtis Grant recently returned from a hamstring injury. Utility player Shawn Riley is also battling to regain match fitness after picking up a slight foot injury while Under 17 national team player Damon Swan - perhaps one of the club's brightest prospects - is still being fed small doses of life in the big league.

Veteran skipper Karl Roberts, Richard Scott and the powerful Gary Ray further augment a solid Trojan defence while the aforementioned Davis - as he proved last Sunday - adds another attacking option to the team orchestrating matters from the middle of the park.

The mere fact that Trott's men are the current Premier Division leaders only lends to the suggestion that perhaps the Trojans just may be onto something.

And coach Trott generally feels the same way.

"Last year this time we were near the bottom of the table and still hadn't won a match," the former national team coach recalled.

"At this point in time we have more points then we had for the entire first- half of last season. All the credit certainly goes to the players who have put in the hard work beginning from the pre-season up until now.

"This year the players have been a joy to coach. It's a total team effort and personal goals come second."

Trott said boldly that his charges had the potential to go on to greater things but stressed it was up to them to put in the necessary commitment.

"It all comes down to their attitudes," he said. "What they decide to achieve in the season comes down to how much hard work they are prepared to put in and at the moment I would give them a B grade. I think that they realise that there's room for improvement."

Trott says he was pleased with the impressive result over Town, the coach's former team.

"Two of the four goals that we scored were actually things that we have been working on in training," he explained.

"We managed to get in behind the defence and that was pleasing to see after we had placed a lot of emphasis on that leading up to the match."

He also had praise for Davis, who he further described as an unsung hero.

"He works extremely hard and plays in any position in which he's asked to play and is really a coach's delight," he said.

"His finishing is looking extremely sharp and for him to run the ten to 15 yards that he did and never break stride was really unbelievable. That was very pleasing that he was able to execute that play to perfection."

The Trojans begin their FA Cup campaign when they take on Boulevard on December 1 and will then get the chance to avenge last season's second round defeat in the same competition to neighbours Somerset Eagles when the two west end clubs renew their fierce rivalry at White Hill Field on December 8.

The postponed Premier Division match between Dandy Town and Boulevard has now been rescheduled for this Saturday at BAA Field beginning at 8 p.m.
