The Salvation Army is serving around 800 meals a day to workers, pensioners and outage-hit householders, said Divisional Commander Lindsay Rowe.

He said deliveries had been made to BELCO workers restoring power at nights, Government workers on the Causeway and to seniors homes across the Island.

Hot meals are also available up to 9 p.m. at Salvation Army centres for those who had no power.

However, Mr. Rowe said the centres themselves were hit by outages and the Salvation Army would be investing in more generators.

He praised those who had helped the Salvation Army.

"The business community has assisted with food, water and money and churches have brought us food and volunteers," said Mr. Rowe. "We have spend $15,000 on buying food alone."

He said around 40 people had used the shelters when their homes were hit by Fabian but all had since moved out.

Many of those who had come for shelter were homeless, he said, including one family who were living in a tent.

"When the storm hit they moved into a bunker in St. George's."
