Prayer vigil for Dakarai tonight

The parents of 15-year-old Dakarai Tucker's continued their call for prayers yesterday, saying doctors can do nothing for their son at the moment.

Tonight a special prayer service will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Hamilton Church from 6.30 p.m. to 7.45 p.m.

And the family has opened two bank accounts as donations continue to pour in from members of the public who want to assist with covering Dakarai's mounting medical bills.

Dakarai collapsed nine days ago at Warwick Academy after a blood vessel ruptured in his brain. He was medivacked to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore.

His parents Dawna and Stephen Tucker remain by his bedside, along with his uncle Bruce DeGrilla.

Speaking on behalf of the family Mr. DeGrilla said: "At the moment all we can do is pray, the doctors have told us they can't do anything until the swelling has reduced.

"At one point he was responding to pain, but then the swelling increased so doctors had to give him medicine to put him into a deep coma. He was taken off the medicine on Monday and doctors have said they will watch him closely to see if there are any improvements in the next few days.

"The ruptured blood vessel is in the middle of his brain so they can't do anything until the swelling has reduced."

Since news spread of Dakarai's situation, money has poured in and prayer groups have met to hold vigils. His classmates at Warwick Academy are also planning a big fundraiser, though details are still unclear.

The Tucker family continues to be amazed at the community's response.

"They always knew he was a great teen," Mr. DeGrilla said. "He is a good role model and well liked. But now they realise that many people across Bermuda see Dakarai as a great kid too.

"Everyday we are hearing about more prayers, groups, websites; it's almost too much to take in. They looked at the Facebook group set up for him (with over 800 members) for the first time yesterday and were amazed at all the messages.

"They are planning to leave updates on Dakarai at the group in the future."

Dakarai has been described as a good student who was well rounded by teachers and his friends have called him a joker. He is also a member of The Academy's Under 16 and Under 18 football teams and a member of the National Under 15 football team.

People interested in donating money can do so at the Bank of Butterfield account 'Dakarai Tucker's Medical Expenses Account'. The number is 20-0060-604-315132-00. There is also an account at the Bank of Bermuda, though the family do not yet know its number. It is also called the 'Dakarai Tucker's Medical Expenses Account'.
