Soccer fans snap up tickets for World Cup
Jamaica at the National Stadium.
Fans are snapping up the tickets for the match following last Sunday's 1-0 victory over El Salvador.
And Mr. Kent Bascome who is co-ordinating the ticket sales at Colonial Insurance said that the game will be sold out by lunchtime today.
Mr. Bascome said that this morning only 250 of the 4,700 tickets remain on sale at one of Gosling's shops, the Bermuda Football Association and Colonial's offices on Reid Street, Hamilton.
More than 800 Bermudians, confident of the team's success, bought books of tickets for all three second round World Cup home games against El Salvador, Jamaica and Canada.
Yesterday, Mr. Bascome said: "Things are starting to pick up again today. By Saturday lunchtime they will all have gone. People who want to go to the match will have to get their tickets quickly.'' BFA President Mr. Charlie Marshall is expecting fans to be just as enthusiastic tomorrow as they were last week.
He believes the marvellous atmosphere created by the crowd against El Salvador, if repeated, will encourage the home side against the Jamaicans.
But he has asked people to act in a more restrained manner in their celebrations to avoid any more pitch invasions which could place the BFA in hot water with FIFA, World football's governing body.
Extra stewards are being drafted in from the Bermuda Regiment to keep the celebrating masses off the pitch if Bermuda win.
Spectators are warned that parking at the Prospect Water Depot off Gymnasium Road is prohibited because of problems last week when water trucks could not get past. The trucks require access 24 hours a day.
Parking is permitted on Gymnasium Field and the Top Square by Ruth Seaton James Auditorium.
Win or lose the team will be honoured with a huge rally organised by their main sponsor the Bank of Bermuda.
The rally on Wednesday is being held to send the team off to their return match in El Salvador with the backing of their fellow Islanders ringing in their ears.
The entire National Team is scheduled to attend the rally which will take place between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. at Albouy's Point, Hamilton.
A host of dignitaries are expected to join in the upbeat gathering which will feature music, DJs and "surprises''.
Bank of Bermuda senior vice president Mr. Louis Mowbray said: "Everyone is welcome to attend. The team, management and entire BFA has done a great job and has instilled a renewed enthusiasm and pride in every Bermudian. Now we can return the favour with a rousing show of public support.'' The Bank of Bermuda also advised that the Drive Through Teller Windows at the Front Street office will be closed at noon. Parking at Albouy's Point will be restricted throughout the day in the interests of public safety.
