Island records tenth road fatality this year
The Island recorded its tenth road fatality early yesterday morning — the second in the past week.
Earlston Kavon Bailey Smith was killed around 4 a.m. Monday morning when he lost control of his motorcycle at the junction of Crow Lane and Corkscrew Hill.
Yesterday, Police released a statement on his death.
"The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of Earlston Kavon Bailey Smith. Around 4 a.m. on Monday, Police and first responders attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of Crow Lane and Corkscrew Hill in Pembroke. As a result they came upon a 31-year-old Southampton man in a non-responsive state a few feet away from his motorcycle which was extensively damaged. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by an on call physician at 4.41 a.m. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."
Police have appealed for witnesses to call PC Timothy Evelyn of the Roads Policing Unit on 299- 4390. Junior Transport Minister Senator Marc Bean offered condolences to the family of Mr. Smith. "On behalf of the Government, I wish to extend my condolences to the Smith family. It seems we get road fatalities in groups and bunches.
"No words can comfort a grieving family who are going through it. The only comfort is for the family to rally around each other."
Last September, the Ministry of Works and Engineering put up signs in the area to warn motorists to slow down and small yellow speed bumps to decrease speed. At the time a Government spokesman said the design will "improve the current road grade allowing for better vehicular handling on Crow Lane, and providing better access from Corkscrew Hill".
The Ministry did not respond by press time to questions surrounding safety of the area.
Mr. Smith's death comes just a week after sailor Adam Goodwin died after his motorcycle hit a wall on October 3 early in the morning.
This newspaper understands a few weeks ago, Mr. Smith was shot in Paget. The 31-year-old was shot in the buttocks in a suspected gang-related incident in Paget on September 17.
