Cann, Woodley named top pacers
Bermuda Pacers Track Club's two outstanding athletes of the year.
Cann, 12, a student at Berkeley Institute, was champion girl at inter-school sports this year, winning the 100 metres, 200 metres (in a record time of 25.4 seconds) and the long jump.
Cann then went on to win the Denton Hurdle Award for primary schools and was champion girl in the Caribbean Union of Teachers Track and Field Championships in Trinidad. She broke the 200 metres record and was first in long jump on her way to the outstanding athlete in the 12-13 girls age group.
The youngster kept her good year going by winning two medals at the East Coast Invitational Championships in Towson, Maryland. She was third in both the 100 and 200 metres and fifth in the long jump. Some 2,000 youngsters participated in the meet.
Woodley began his year by placing 15th in the Bank of Butterfield Front Street mile before setting two records in high jump and long jump at inter-school sports.
At the CARIFTA Games Woodley leapt 6'5'' in the high jump and 46'10'' in the triple jump for his two gold medals. He also brought home a silver for the 22'8'' jump in the long jump.
The 16-year-old Warwick Secondary student, who has already attracted scholarship offers from abroad, also won a gold and a silver at the East Coast Invitationals. He won the high jump with a jump of 6'6'' and was second in the triple jump with a leap of 46'4''.
At the Junior CAC Games he won silver medals in the high jump and long jump.
The Pacers, the largest track club in Bermuda, have had some notable athletes come through their ranks, including world-ranked jumpers Clarance (Nicky) Saunders and Brian Wellman, runners Kavin Smith and Albert (Jay) Donawa and most recently Susan Richards, Judy Fletcher and Shequita Parsons. There is a membership of about 60 youngsters.
Last year's two outstanding athletes were Devon Bean and Jarita Dill while Donawa and Monique Hunt were the 1990 winners.
