Policy and decision makers from the Caribbean and the rest of the UK Overseas Territories will meet in Bermuda in November to discuss the creation of Police Complaints Authorities.

?The conference is intended to examine the many issues and legislative concerns involved in establishing and running a successful Police Complaints Authority,? Government spokesperson John Burchall said.

Bermuda is the only UK Overseas Territory that has a Police Complaints Authority. The conference is being sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Bermuda Government.

The panel of international experts include Dr. V. Ayeni, Director of Governance and Institutional Development and Commonwealth Secretariat; I. Bynoe Commissioner of the UK Independent Police Complaints Commission and Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith.

Also scheduled to speak is Harvard University Law School vice-dean of Clinical Programmes and well known American legal and political commentator, Charles Ogletree. The conference will run between November 18 and 22.

Police yesterday found the marijuana plot first discovered by The Royal Gazette and featured in yesterday?s newspaper.

This paper was directed to the site by an anonymous caller who said he had grown the illegal drug there for four years but had given up on it after finding out Police had it under surveillance.

The four-by-12 metre plot was hidden in dense woodland of Leamington Lane bordering the Government quarry in St. George?s Parish had harboured a crop which had netted him $40,000.

Yesterday Police said they had found a sizeable patch of cannabis plants after a difficult search. The statement said: ?The plot was concealed and would only have been known to persons responsible for its cultivation.

?These plants were in excess of 12 feet and were uprooted and conveyed to Police headquarters. An investigation is underway."

The Bermuda Alliance for Tourism (BAT) will hold a fundraiser at Hawkins Island over the Labour Day weekend.

The event has been arranged to take place on the anniversary of Hurricane Fabian as a means of celebrating how Bermuda fared well through it.

The Legal Aid department will be closed to the public all next week because it is moving from Magistrates? Court to a new location.

It will re-open for business on September 7 from the first floor of the Ingham-Wilkinson building on 129 Front Street.
