Cougars, Trojans share points
A draw seemed a fair result in this Coca Cola First Division match last night at Somerset after home team Cougars dominated the first half and Somerset the second.
However, both teams can count themselves unlucky not to have snatched all three points as Cougars failed to capitalise on some good chances before the break while Somerset had three good opportunities late in the game.
Cougars' 14th minute goal by Wali Salaam separated the teams at the half. The striker followed up and planting home a rebound from close range after goalkeeper Winslow Williams had blocked a shot from Raynell Lightbourne.
Just before the break Salaam set up Sergio Goater with a short pass on the edge of the box but the shot, which Goater tried to place inside the near post, was turned around for a corner by Williams.
Moments later Maxwell Dill blasted just over the bar after pouncing on a loose ball outside the box.
Somerset, despite fielding the same team that beat Hotels in their season opener last week, looked only a shadow of that team. However, things did get better in the second half as they came out with noticeably more aggression and determination.
Their equaliser almost came in the 51st minute when Marco Butterfield close range sidefoot effort was tipped over the top by 'keeper Leon Place who was now being given some work. Somerset were pulling the strings and the introduction of Karl Roberts and Lamaul Crofton helped them keep up the pressure.
The equaliser came in the 65th minute when a long ball through the middle opened the Cougars defence and the speedy Crofton got through before slotting the ball past Place and into the bottom corner.
The upright denied Frankie Simmons what would have been the winner in the 76th minute with Place at full stretch. Two more good Somerset chances after that brought this match to an exciting finish, first when Place hurroed off his line to block Jelani Scott's shot.
The final chance fell to Clifton Anderson who had his effort blocked by Place in the dying seconds of the game.
Wolves 1, Ham. Parish 0 Wolves made it two wins in a row when this match between two promotion favourites was settled by Anthony Thomas' 15th minute goal.
Wolves sub Nathan Webb missed two good chances in the second half to seal the win for Wolves, the first with his first touch which he put over the bar. Soon after he was set up perfectly by John Barry Nusum but shot wide when with just the goalkeeper to beat.
