Candidates named for footballer of the year

Player of the year in 1994, Carlos Smith, young player of the year, Quincy Aberdeen and top coach Mark Trott all failed to make the list.

Smith, after exploding on the scene last season, endured a sub par year, while Aberdeen has been abroad in school most of the year. Trott, with his duties involving the Bermuda Under-23 team, likewise did not figure in the voting.

Dudley Eve Trophy champions Somerset are heavily represented with midfielder Reggie Tucker and goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson up for the senior player award, while striker Lamaul Crofton is a candidate for the young player prize. Coach Josef Gooden is also in with a shot in that category.

No other team has more than one nominee.

Meanwhile, added this year is the category of referee of the year and the criteria for selecting the leading goal scorers have been modified to include selected cup competitions in the various divisions.

The complete list is as follows: Referee of the Year: Esten Curtis, Roddy Burchall, Stuart Crockwell, Richard Knight.

Coach of the Year: John Rebello (Vasco), Josef Gooden (Somerset), Gary Darrell (Southampton), Neil Paynter (St. George's).

Young Player of the Year: Nakia Smith (North Village), Dano Outerbridge (PHC), Lamaul Crofton (Somerset), Jahmah Samuels (Devonshire Colts).

Player of the Year: Andre Hendrickson (Somerset), Dwight Warren (Boulevard), Reggie Tucker (Somerset), Darron Simons (Dandy Town).

A scaled down version of the Lanzera Youth Soccer Cup will take place next wek.

Just two foreign teams -- Green Tree Dragons and First F.C. Kosice -- have been recruited for the event which will involve players under the age of 14.

Action gets underway on Monday using a round robin format, with the final on Thursday.
