Claims that gambling enthusiasts will be able to use credit cards and ATM machines when playing Crown and Anchor during this week's Cup Match Classic have been hit for six.

Last week concessionaire Eddie Welch told The Royal Gazette that Crown and Anchor customers would be able to use their credit cards to get a cash advance and that he was working on putting an ATM machine on the grounds.

However, Mr. Welch said yesterday that the Bank of Bermuda had since informed him it would be too much trouble and that people might abuse the system.

He added that the bank said to him that people may end up disputing their credit card bill.

And the the bank also told him that there would not be enough time to arrange for an ATM machine to be put next to the Crown and Anchor tables.

Yesterday a bank spokesperson said: "The Bank of Bermuda did have some very preliminary discussions with Mr. Welch about placing an ATM machine at Cup Match. The idea did not proceed because of timing and ATM machine availability issues.

"The installation of the credit card terminals did not proceed because of timing and logistical issues," said the spokesperson.

Mr. Welch said yesterday that the Somerset Cricket Club was checking with the Bank of Butterfield about getting an ATM from them.

But Bank of Butterfield Marketing and Communications vice president, Karen Cabral confirmed that the bank would not be placing an ATM machine at Cup Match.
