Cup cash to fund scholarship
The 2005 Belco Cup series will be played in honour of late St.David?s cricketer Delby Borden, Bermuda Cricket Board announced yesterday.
Speaking at the headquarters of the competition?s sponsors, BCB treasurer Neil Speight confirmed: ?The Belco Cup will be played in Delby?s honour and used as a fundraiser to help with obtaining a scholarship for Delyone (son of the late Borden) to attend college later this year.?
Proceeds from the event, Speight explained, would be placed into a bank account specifically for the purposes of funding the young Borden?s education overseas.
Earlier this year Delyone and fellow St.David?s islander OJ Pitcher attended the Nelson Mandela International Cricket Academy in South Africa. Both players are currently challenging for a spot on Bermuda?s ICC Trophy squad.
Speight added: ?The money will go towards a very valuable cause and we will also have some draw prizes which will hopefully be extended by the time of the game.?
Prizes so far include watches donated by Crissons, the popular Blackberry personal device system, donated by local cell phone company Cingular Wireless and various travel vouchers donated by Franklyn/Meyer Travel.
It was also revealed yesterday that all cricket umpires involved in this month?s Belco Cup competition had donated their match earnings towards the scholarship fund while officials at St.David?s will play an active role in helping to raise extra cash.
Borden, 45, died of a massive heart attack at his St.David?s home in mid-March, leaving the East End community to mourn the loss of a dedicated administrator and passionate cricket lover.
