WHO has the safest hands? Well whoever does at this year’s Cup Match starting tomorrow at the St. George’s Cricket Club will be awarded more than a trophy. The Safe Hands Award, inaugurated in 1996 in honour of legendary St. George’s Cup Match skipper Cal (Bummy) Symonds, will see the winner presented not only with the trophy but also with cash, round-trip tickets and a meal for two.Rolfe Commissiong, president of Blackstar Communications which presents the award, said yesterday that sponsors Bank of Butterfield have increased the prize money this year. “In addition to the cup, there is a cash prize of $1,000, two round-trip tickets to a gateway city, playing kit and dinner for two at Greg’s Steakhouse.
“The increase in prize money from last year as well as the dinner for two is a little extra in light of the 10th anniversary (of the award),” said Commissiong.
Last year’s winner was Bermuda’s Under-19 captain Rodney Trott.
“It has always been our intention to give something back to the players which we think this does in a big way and also to highlight an aspect of the game that in our opinion has been under appreciated,” added Commissiong.
Somerset skipper Janeiro Tucker remains the only player to win the award on two occasions.
The Safe Hands Award will go to the player judged by adjudicators to have been the best fielder over the course of the two-day match.
