Give them time

February 19, 2013Dear Sir,Term limits were introduced to control the length of stay of some of our guest workers with the expectations that it would create more jobs for Bermudians. Is it not ironic that the reverse of what was intended happened? The result we got was a mass exodus (2,000-plus) of our guest workers leaving Bermuda and taking along with them some of our top local talent which is a tragedy for Bermuda as we may never get them back again and over 3,000 Bermudians out of work and growing by the day.Furthermore some Bermudians with homes, offices and businesses cannot rent or generate enough income to make payments to stay in business. I don’t think any Bermudian can say he hasn’t been affected by the situation that were in. Our government does not have the capacity to earn enough money to pay our national debt and carry on its day to day business as we have to borrow large amounts of money to survive. If our government was a business we would considered closing it down as a bankrupt business, wouldn’t we? We need to attract foreign business to generate new money to keep us living in the standard that we are use to. We can’t go back to the old days because we have nothing to ship abroad to earn an income and we can’t produce enough food to sustain us.Here is a question for you. If a Bermudian and a visitor stopped for lunch at a local restaurant and both spent $60 each, which payment would be more beneficial to Bermuda and why? The answer is: the visitor’s payment would be more beneficial as this is new money coming in to support the local economy. The Bermudian’s money just circulates in Bermuda and eventually leaves to purchase goods overseas. We have just elected a new government and we need to give them some time to fix the problem and offer support not criticism. We as a people can help tremendously by welcoming our guest workers and visitors and let them know that we are open and ready to do business.ERNEST DECOUTO(Not the former speaker)
