Bishop returns to Bermuda for Allen Temple celebration

President of the World Council of Churches and AME Bishop Vinton R. Anderson will be helping Allen Temple celebratate its 120th anniversary this week.

Bishop Anderson, a Bermudian, was once a member of Allen Temple before leaving Bermuda to study the ministry.

The Bishop said: "I am here for a week and I am delighted to be back in Bermuda. I have been around the world and there is no place more beautiful than Bermuda.'' Progressive Labour Party MP Mr. Walter Lister said the bishop and his wife Vivian "have held the flag high for Bermuda all around the world where they have travelled in conjunction with his being President of World Council of Churches.

"The United Nations has declared 1993 the year of indigenous people, and keeping with that we thought it was a good idea to bring back one of Allen Temples sons.'' Allen Temple's Rev. Christopher Hayne said it was an honour to have Bishop Anderson and his wife in Bermuda.

"He is doing us proud,'' he said. "He is the first person from Bermuda to be elected Bishop and President of the World Council of Churches.'' The anniversary celebration will start with a banquet at Marriott's Castle Harbour Resort tonight. A ceremony on Sunday will uncover a plaque in recognition of the anniversary and the return home of Bishop Anderson.

WELCOME BACK -- Bermudian Bishop Vinton R. Anderson was welcomed with open arms this week as he came back to Bermuda to take part in Allen Temple's 120th anniversary.
