Bermudians join Kosovo relief effort

"We've had elderly people driving all the way from Somerset (to St. David's) to make donations,'' said Lucy Willets of the Medjugorje peace group.

Yugoslavia's war-torn province of Kosovo.

"We've had elderly people driving all the way from Somerset (to St. David's) to make donations,'' said Lucy Willets of the Medjugorje peace group.

The charity group has been accepting individual and corporate donations of food, clothing and other necessities to aid hundreds of thousands of displaced ethnic Albanians.

"The response has been truly wonderful. Our phones have been ringing off the hook,'' Mrs. Willets.

As NATO bombing enteres its third week, the alliance is also about to launch Operation Allied Harbour, a 14-nation effort involving 8,000 troops, to help refugees in Albania.

Locally, Mrs. Willets said the relief effort has been boosted by monetary donations.

"Thanks to donations by members of the public, we can now fund two containers,'' she said.

And she was optimistic delays in dispatching the container would soon be overcome.

"We have been hampered in getting the first container off because of difficulties in getting a specific destination near the refugee camps,'' she explained.

"It is pretty chaotic over there. But we hope this will be sorted out in the next dew days.'' Volunteers will accept non-perishable food and clothing donations at the Peace Warehouse at the former US Base in St. David's from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Persons looking for the building should go through the main gates, take an immediate right turn, pass through wire gates and then head toward a bright yellow building. The warehouse is located nearby.

Mrs. Willets also repeated an appeal for special shoe boxes of toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo, and "something fun'' for child victims.

"The children need not only food and clothing but cheering up as well,'' she said.

Also in response to public concern over Kosovo, the Bermuda Red Cross have set up accounts in three of the Island's banks. Members of the public wishing to make donations can deposit cheques into the following accounts: Bank of Bermuda ( 701-19842), Bank of Butterfield ( 006-060-663859-200) and Gibbons Deposit Company ( 16016).

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies will be launching an integrated appeal soon for the present war. The aid will be used to cover the Federal Republic of Yougoslavia, Albania, the former Yougoslav republic of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Red Cross say the scale of the refugee crisis will require "major cash contributions to ensure maximum operational flexibility.'' Thirty-four Red Cross workers are currently in the region.
