BTFA step up Carifta preparation

Carifta Games hopefuls will get another shot at reaching the required standard this Sunday when Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) host the second track meet in as many weeks at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

The annual Games are scheduled for April 9 to 13 in St. Lucia.

With 19 junior athletes already pencilled in to compete at the Caribbean classic, the BTFA will be hosting track meets every weekend from now until the team travel to give those close to the qualifying mark every opportunity to reach their target.

Events that will be staged will include 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000 and 5000 metres as well as the traditional field events such as discus, triple jump, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Relay races will also be on the schedule, with registration for the weekend meets at 12.30 p.m. (entry fee $5).

Games team manager Donna Watson is hopeful that this weekend will result in a few more athletes cementing their spots for the April event, noting that last week's meet didn't go as anticipated with weather being the main winner.

"The weekend was not what we hoped for," said Watson. "We only had Jasmine Brunson, who had already reached the 'B' standard in triple jump, reaching the 'A' standard. Hopefully we will have some good weather this weekend.

"We now have 19 athletes who have qualified with Matthew Spring also reaching the 'B' standard in the 800 metres.

"The qualified athletes are Aaron Evans, Sean Trott, Ryan Furbert, Jeneko Place, Shaquille Dill, Trey Simons, Juma Mouchette, Dage Minors, Kameron Creighton, Shawn Herman, Ashley Berry, Alexis Bean, Jasmine Brunson, Taylor-Ashley Bean, Megan Berry, Shuntae Hendrickson and Shawnae Brangman.

"There are several athletes who are also close to the standard with Tre Houston (100 and 200), Kyle Virgil (200 and 400), Darico Clarke (400 and 800), Alison Outerbridge (triple jump), Henry Carty-Stevens (800 and 1500), Kyla Bolden (800 and 1500), Darrion Simons (100 and 200), and Keshuntay Graham (100 and 200) all close.

"We are very hopeful that these athletes will reach the standard by the deadline of March 15.

"We will be having track meets every weekend from now leading up to Carifta and are looking at sending the team to a pre-Carifta outdoor track meet in Florida in preparation for the Games if funds permit."
