Tourist had cannabis in her purse

An American tourist was caught with a wrap of cannabis in her purse at L. F. Wade International Airport.

Alyse Spiegel, 32, pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court on Friday to importation of drugs.

The court heard Customs officers discovered the plastic wrap of cannabis while searching her duffel bag on arrival at the airport.

Crown Counsel Cindy Clarke told the court the defendant arrived from New York with a male companion on Saturday morning. She was carrying two pieces of luggage a black bag and a blue and lime duffel bag.

Miss Clarke said: "While she was in the Customs clearance line, the defendant was referred to security for a check by Customs officers.

"During a search of her luggage there was a pungent odour of what appeared to be cannabis from the duffel bag. The defendant is said to have said, 'Oh s**t, I smell weed'."

Customs officers found a plastic wrap containing 0.93 grams of cannabis in a small pocket of her purse.

Spiegel, who has no previous convictions in Bermuda, said she was visiting the Island for a wedding. She told officers: "I am extraordinarily sorry."

Yesterday she told the court: "I am terribly sorry. I'm embarrassed this has happened and I ask for mercy from the court.

"This is a beautiful country. I have enjoyed it greatly in the past few days and would very much like to come back here. I am sorry."

Senior magistrate Archibald Warner fined Spiegel $1,500.
