Man jailed for carrying machete
A 41-year-old Pembroke man was sentenced to three months in prison Wednesday, for having a machete in a public place.Ross Parsons, of Marsh Lane, Pembroke, was caught carrying the weapon in his pants on Union Street.Magistrates’ Court heard officers searched him near Place’s Place in Pembroke around 10.15pm on June 10.They found a machete with a 16in blade, which Parsons said was necessary for his job at Morgan’s Point.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said yesterday: “I reject that defence. It is ridiculous. In any event, it doesn’t matter if, coincidentally, the machete is already for work purposes.“For instance, if you are a landscaper driving along with tools in your truck, and you get in an altercation with someone, you can’t take a machete from your truck, which you use for landscaping purposes, and threaten somebody with it.”Parsons was remanded into custody June 19.Mr Warner released Parsons on Wednesday with time already spent in custody taken into consideration.
