Matthews grabs first in showdown with Smith
secondary school girls division of the Junior Cross Country Race Series, the first event of the 1994 BTFA/Minute Maid Junior Series.
The Matthews-Smith showdown was the highlight of the day, with Matthews grabbing first with a time of 15.42 while Smith was second at 15.48. Third was Freedom Trott. The girls ran a course of 1.8 miles.
In the secondary schools boys division, Collin Anderson led the way in 23.21 followed by Kris Hedges (24.23) and Ki-Jah Butterfield (25.17). The six-kilometre course will be the same one used for the Caribbean Cross Country Championships, to be held in Bermuda in January.
Richard Wolcott (10.23) won in fine fashion in the primary boys race, with Kemar Curtis (10.49) and Kyle Smith (10.56) finishing second and third respectively.
The primary girls, running a 1.3 mile course through the Warwick dunes and along Horseshoe Beach, featured an impressive performance by first-place finisher Emma Rego (11.05). Second was Akilah Mills (11.36) followed by Ashley Roberts (12.18) in third.
The next race in the series takes place on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at Ferry Point Park.
