Nerves jangle for grannies in the glamour stakes

Some of Bermuda's most stunning seniors will be "struttin' their stuff" in Friday's Glamorous Granny competition.

The competition, which will start at 1.30 p.m. at Cathedral Hall, is part of the annual Island-wide 'Social for Seniors'.

Seven senior ladies have signed up to compete in this year's event, which will be MC'd by Elspeth Gibson.

And Westmeath seniors' home activities co-ordinator Elizabeth Wingate said the competition, which is now in its fifth year, is very popular for audience and participants alike.

"The Glamorous Granny does seem to be becoming a known personality, and they all have a lovely time," said Mrs. Wingate.

"We encourage the ladies to wear what they think they look good in. One year, one lady came dressed as Mary Poppins - and she won," she said.

Mrs. Wingate said there isn't any particular type of woman that enters the competition - although most are slightly outgoing "to be brave enough to get up there in the first place".

Last year's winner Edna Bean said she entered the competition so that her club, the Golden Hour from Peace Lutheran Church, would be represented.

"It wasn't my idea but I decided to give it a try, and I was really surprised I won," she said.

The 69-year-old said that she was a person who preferred to be 'behind-the-scenes', but has been pleasantly surprised by how much she has enjoyed performing the duties of the Glamorous Granny 2000.

Since winning the competition, Mrs. Bean has appeared at a number of functions in a tiara and sash, such as the Santa Claus parade and the Heritage Day Parade. "It's been very, very exciting, it's been a great experience, and I've enjoyed every moment," she said.

To enter the Glamorous Granny competition, you don't actually have to be a grandmother - any woman over 65 is eligible.

The event is usually "standing room only", but the public are welcomed to attend if they can squeeze into Cathedral Hall. To enter the competion, call 295-9094 or Mrs. Wingate on 238-8658.
