Barritt welcomes revived Law Reform Committee

Opposition United Bermuda Party MP John Barritt (right) has welcomed the revival of the Law Reform Committee.

Parliamentary questions revealed the committee sat on April 26 and May 17 this year after being out of action for some time.

He said: "For the last two years there has been no money set aside in the Budget."

The committee can do valuable work in updating Bermuda's laws, said Mr. Barritt, who hopes it will review the double jeopardy rule in which defendants cannot be tried for the same crime twice.

Mr. Barritt said the slow pace of legislation could be related to the committee having been out of action.

He urged Government to pay for a parliamentary draftsman to be attached to the committee.

Parking advisory at Daniel's Head

The Ministry of Works and Engineering has issued a parking advisory for Daniel's Head beach in Sandys, warning the public to observe the posted restrictions.

Works and Engineering are also asking that people co-operate with the security officer on duty.

Access to the beach is normal and members of the public may drive down to the beach for drop-off purposes only.

Parking on the beach is not allowed however.

Thief makes off with camera, necklace

A thief stole a digital camera and a pearl necklace from visitors to the Island on July 27. The tourists told Police that someone broke into their Paget guesthouse sometime between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. while they were out. The Police are investigating the break-in.

Warwick home broken into

A Warwick residence was broken into sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 3 a.m. yesterday. The unknown culprit stole two handbags which contained personal items. A leather wallet containing $50 and a denim jacket were also taken from the residence. Police are investigating the matter.

Bicycle goes missing

A bicycle was stolen from a St. Anne's Road home over the holiday.

The cream and red Raleigh 24-gear men's cycle, equipped with shock absorbers, was stolen sometime between the evening of July 31 and the early hours of August 1.

Intruder escapes from bank building

The Bank of Bermuda Colonial Building on Gorham's Road, Pembroke, was broken into on August 2.

An employee noticed a motion detector go off at 3 a.m. that morning.

He saw that a side door was partly open and a man was standing behind the counter staring at him.

The culprit escaped but was later apprehended at the Hamilton Police station.
