The son of Health Minister Nelson Bascome opted for a Supreme Court trial yesterday in his first appearance in court on alleged cannabis importation charges.

Nelson Bascome III, 23, of Friswell's Hill, Pembroke, was arrested at the Bermuda International Airport when he returned home from college for the Christmas holidays on December 18 last year.

Magistrate Will Francis did not read out the charge or charges Bascome is facing. Nelson Bascome Sr. and his wife Shirlene observed the short court proceedings while sitting by their son.

Bascome, who was being represented by defence lawyer Victoria Pearman, opted for a Supreme Court trial. He did not have to enter a plea.

Bascome was released on $5,000 bail, with a like surety, and was required to surrender all travel documents. He must also report to Hamilton Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday.

Mr. Francis adjourned the case until February 7, when it will be mentioned again.
