Ace Building Lobby: Alfred Birdsey An exhibition of paintings by Alfred Birdsey from the Collection of E. Michael Jones is on until December 31. As one of Bermuda's most celebrated artists, Alfred Birdsey stood alone for most of the second half of the 20th century as the only modernist painter working in Bermuda. Entirely self-taught, it is believed he started painting in 1927 at the age of 16. This exhibition of paintings is selected from the extensive collection of E. Michael Jones, one of Birdsey's major collectors. The gallery is open to Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. except by appointment. Groups should call for an appointment 295-5200.

Bermuda Maritime Museum, Dockyard: (1) Commissioner's House: The Exploring Voyage of HMS Challenger in Bermuda 1873. A selection of original and reproduction photographs depicting Bermuda, which were used as evidence in the scientific reports of the Challenger voyage, 1872-76. (2) From the Fay and Geoffrey Elliott Collection: 'U-505 Captured', an exhibit telling the remarkable story of the capture off western Africa and the hiding in Bermuda of the submarine U-505. (3) Steinhoff Magazine, High Cave: 'Prisoners in Paradise': Artefacts in Bermuda cedar/stone/other materials created by Dockyard convict establishment, and prisoners of the Boer and World Wars. Designed to get children out from behind their computer screens, this creative art workshops with Ami Zanders will have a new and exciting project every week including wall hangings, accordion books and baskets. Whilst making these creations, students will learn a range of skills from printmaking, weaving, wool painting, tie-dye and batik. All materials are supplied.
