Liberal Party has demanded.

At the same time, residents should not dump garbage on the roadside and should ensure it is properly disposed of to keep Bermuda beautiful.

The NLP demands come in the wake of the Devonshire North by-election when residents complained of foul smells and insects due to bags of rotting garbage left on roadsides.

Party chairman Charles Jeffers said: "Many residents have nowhere to store their filled garbage bags and are forced to leave them outside for the weekly collection.

"During the recent by-election campaign, we were made very aware of the problems of foul smells and the danger of disease from insects drawn to the area by rotting garbage.

"In addition, animals destroy bags and scatter garbage. This situation is bad for residents and visitors alike.'' Mr. Jeffers said one reason for the situation was Government's decision to change trash collections from two days a week to one day.

But he also blamed residents adding: "Keeping Bermuda beautiful must be a community project.

"Residents must be vigilant to ensure that if possible no dumping takes place in their areas and if there are dumping problems they are reported to the proper authorities. We should all be involved in keeping the areas around our homes clean and tidy.'' He added: "The NLP calls on Government to restore the twice-a-week garbage collection for the health and welfare of the Island.

"We agree that Government should be examining ways for cutting expenditure, but we do not believe that garbage collection should be one of the cost-cutting measures.''
