Who needs a Govt anyway?
March 5, 2014
Dear Sir,
I’m beginning to wonder if any Government — other than a PLP -style Government — can actually make any difference in Bermuda. And please do not interpret that as a suggestion that a PLP government could ever actually be capable of managing anything.
If you think about it, who needs the benefits of a Government? The private sector can pretty much manage its affairs better than any Government; the main pillars of our economy are now effectively run by the private sector anyway; those who have jobs and any form of wealth don’t rely on Government for very much, maybe trash collection but nothing else that can’t be purchased separately. If I have a decent job and a roof over my head I don’t absolutely need public transport, the postal system, the public education system and I could make an argument that a Government would have to provide basic medical services — so anyone could purchase that product.
My point is that the Government of Bermuda is really there to provide a social infrastructure for people who need it and the general legal infrastructure for conducting the business that we have here. It is fair to suggest that those who can pay, should pay taxes no matter what they use but if that burden becomes onerous they can leave. Would they have jobs if the Government didn’t allow the hospitality and international business arenas to flourish ... no, but that would be killing the golden goose and even the PLP is not dumb enough to destroy the economy without repercussion.
All these current problems in Bermuda are related to services that are NOT essential to most of us or they are arguments over how to reduce costs and pay the debt. So if the PLP and their supporters don’t want to allow the OBA to deal with these things competently and realistically, then I say do it your damn selves! Let Chris Furbert and Marc Bean run the country ... they cannot borrow any more and the only people they will hurt with their incompetence will be their own support. Simplistic and not without issues but it works for me ... I’ll pay my fair share and the Government just leaves me alone. Perfect solution.
