The Garden Club of Bermuda awarded horticultural enthusiasts scholarships on Tuesday at the Botanical Gardens.
Seven students interested in horticulture-related studies were awarded scholarships. The scholarships are for financial assistance to go towards study of horticulture, landscape architecture or environmental studies.
The recipients were Aaron Furbert who will attend Capel Manor College in the United Kingdom, Peter Lee who will also study in the United Kingdom at Writtle College, Melanie Burrows will study at the University of the West Indies, David McCann will be at Stockbridge School of Agriculture, which is part of the University of Massachusetts, Vanese Flood will attend the University of Georgia, Khamala Jones will attend Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and Dawn Santucci-Smith will attend Texas A&M University.
The money for the scholarship was raised from the Freer Cox and the Dorothy and Bayfield Clark investment funds, said Molly White, chair of the scholarship committee as well as from successful Open House and Garden programmes held each May by the Garden Club.
President of the Garden Club, Sally Gibbons said: "We're very proud of these students and they have excellent career goals.
"We can't take care of our environment unless we know about it and we want them to be able to come back and work to help our environment."
