Three East End organisations are looking to join forces to help promote boxing.

St. David's Cricket Club, St. George's Cricket Club and the US Naval Air Station want to promote matches regularly on a rotating basis.

Tonight sees the USNAS host the first fight night with eight bouts scheduled.

World International Boxing Federation champion Roy Jones has been recruited to stand in the corner of the US boxers and is also expected to give a demonstration.

Next Saturday night will see St. George's host an as yet unconfirmed card, with the club still appealing for additional boxers. Interested fighters should call Mansfield Smith at 297-0518.

FISHING FSH The once popular Bacardi Rum Angling tournament is to return later this month following a six year hiatus -- but under a new format.

Bacardi International spokesman James Amos announced that this year would see a simplified tournament that would reward the boat with an overall prize and restrict the species of fish and class of boat allowed.

Tuna, wahoo and dolphin catches only will qualify and craft categories will be divided into those over 27 feet (Class A) and those up to and including 27 feet (Class B).

"We are hoping the new format will appeal to a broad range of angling abilities,'' Amos said. "The whole tournament is simplified considerably.

"We just want the anglers to go out and have a good relaxing day of fishing with a chance for the boat to win a prize at the end of the day.'' The weigh-in station will be at Barr's Bay Park in Hamilton instead of Albouy's Point.

ROAD RUNNING RUN The penultimate event in the annual KPMG Peat Marwick national road running series takes place tomorrow evening -- a five miler along North Shore.

The Swans Running Club race starts at 7.00 p.m. at West Pembroke School and heads east to the finish line at Shelly Bay field.

It wasn't known yesterday how many entries were expected as entry forms were late getting to the various outlets, but with a number of close battles emerging in the series' age groups, particularly in the male Masters (over 40), several of the Island's top runners will likely compete.

Entries officially closed yesterday but late applications will be accepted at the start line tomorrow.
