Two new Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases and one Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) case have been reported recently.

The new cases were reported to the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit for the between April 1 and June 30, according to a press release.

The total number of reported cases this year is seven and the cumulative total of HIV cases since 1985 is 540, said the press release.

Out of the two most recently reported HIV cases, one was in the 20?29 year age group and the other was in the 30?39 age group. One case was male and the other female.

Sexual activity, either heterosexual or homosexual, was the reported cause of infection for both cases.

The one reported AIDS case of this quarter was female in the 20?29 year age group and the reported cause of infection was heterosexual activity.

The total number of AIDS cases reported this year is four and the cumulative number of AIDS cases since 1982 is 491.

No deaths have been reported for AIDS this quarter and there have been no deaths reported this year. The total number of deaths reported since 1982 has been 387.

Visitor injured in crash

A serious single vehicle road traffic accident last Friday evening put a visitor to the Island in hospital with head and internal injuries.

At 7.35 p.m. Police attended the scene of the accident on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish near Shelly Bay.

The American visitor, from Tennessee, was driving a rental cycle east on North Shore Road when he lost control and struck the sidewalk.

He is currently in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the King Edward IIV Memorial hospital.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact P.c. Mallory on 295-0011.

Caught in the act

A thief who was caught in the middle of a break-in and beaten up by a Harrington Sound Road, Smith?s resident is in Police custody awaiting charges.

The 40-year-old Pembroke man was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after he was confronted by a 21-year-old.

The older man was arrested around 1.30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and is assisting Police with their inquiries.
