The New England Professional Golfers Association opened a two-point lead after the second day of the International Challenge against the Bermuda PGA in

The four-ball match play segment saw the hosts win 81 -61 at the Pine Brook Country Club in Weston after the teams opened at seven-and-a-half points apiece in the foursomes on Tuesday at Colonial Golf Club.

Bermuda's biggest winners were J.J. Madeiros and Herbie Minors who beat Kirk Hanefeld and Ed Whalley 21 -1 , and Kim Swan and Keith Smith, who beat Paul Parajeckas and Kurt Sokolowski by the same score.

The other three matches went New England's way, however, as Kevin Benevides and Rawn Rabain were shut out 3-0 by Tom Tetrault and Lee Danielian. Joe Carr and Chuck Frithsen got by Anthony Mocklow and Cornell Bean 2-1, and Jack Devine and Gerry Mackedon were 21 -1 winners over Eardley Jones and John Mason.

The challenge continues today with individual match play with New England ahead 16-14.

ATHLETICS ATH Bermudian Jennifer Fisher finished third in the Oceanfront 8-K in Virginia Beach over the weekend.

Fisher, who has been competing throughout the United States the past six weeks, was clocked in 31 minutes, 31 seconds, which was also good enough for second place in her age group and 18th overall from over 200 runners.

The winner was Leslie Fedon of Virginia Beach in 28:45 and the second-placed woman finished in 30:26.

Fisher's husband, Eddie, finished third in the 40 to 44 age group in 34:12.

The pair are now en route to Atlanta where they will compete in their second biathlon. Jennifer was a surprising second recently in her debut attempt at the running and shooting disciplines.

CRICKET CRI Southampton Rangers booked a spot in Saturday's Shell Youth Tournament final against Nationals by virtue of having lost fewer wickets in their tied semifinal with St. David's on Saturday at Lord's.

With Southampton not having a scorer, the one book used came under close scrutiny after both teams scored 91 -- Rangers having lost eight wickets in their allotted 30 overs and St. David's being all out in 26.5 overs.

Southampton were thus declared the winners on higher strike rate, 11.4 to 9.1.

Featured in the Southampton batting was Dauwed Tucker who was high man with 30 while J.Foggo took two for four for St. David's. For St. David's Rudell Pitcher was high man with 24 while Alex DeCosta took three for 14.

Saturday's final will take place at Nationals.

Southampton will hold a training session at the club today (6 p.m.) in preparation for the final.

Eastern Counties champions St. David's, junior and senior, will hold a victory march tomorrow night from the club starting at 7.30. St. David's will also use the occasion to celebrate their first Benson & Hedges Champion of Champions triumph and promotion to soccer's BFA First Division for the first time earlier this year.

SOCCER SOC The Bermuda Youth Sports Programme will have its registration for the upcoming soccer season on Saturday.

The registration will be held at the gate of the NAS Annex in Sandys and at the NAS in St. George's at the concession stand from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be two divisions -- five to eight years old and nine to 14. Parents are to bring proof of their child's age with them.

The fee will be $20 per child.
