Drug rehab retreat Camp Spirit is to be moved from Darrell?s Island to a location on the mainland.

National Drug Control Minister Wayne Perinchief said it would provide more beds and allow year-round counselling for the popular programme. He told : ?We are trying to expand capacity for Camp Spirit. After a person has been detoxed their long-term recovery is the issue.

?But Camp Spirit only has room for 14 beds ? there is a big gap in that programme ? when they close in the summer.?

For two months every year Darrell?s Island is used for camping by the AME Church and the Youth and Sport Ministry, said the Drugs Control Minister.

?There?s not enough capacity ? especially in the summer months because of the lack of continuity. We are in the process of providing a larger, Government-owned building.

?We haven?t put it to planning yet. It?s in the process of negotiation. We are looking for by next summer have this place in operation. It?s in the West with 20 beds. We would shift the programme there.?
