Bermuda's Government stepped up security to protect US interests and calm fears after this morning's carnage in the States.

And hotels and Government are working together to cope with an influx of passengers after seven flights from the US and Europe were diverted to Bermuda, with six more expected at press time this afternoon.

Around 500 beds have been found in hotels. Government is looking to use beds at the regiment, on cruise ships and beds might be flown in from the UK, said Paula Cox.

Large sections of the regiment have been embodied including at least 100 members of the A company infantry division, support company and members from Headquarters.

The decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting of the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) were held in the wake of the attacks in the US.

Security had been stepped up at the airport to receive diverted aircraft.

At an emergency conference held at the Police headquarters, Premier Jennifer Smith said that Bermuda was also taking action to protect US interests on the Island.

The regular weekly cabinet meeting was suspended as news of the disaster came in, and an emergency meeting of an expanded Emergency Measures Organisation was called.

Armed police have been sent to the airport and explosive experts are working out of the security command centre there. Security has been increased at perimeter at the airport.

The Premier said : "It's an extraordinary event for us.. we want to protect the security, as best we can, of US interests in Bermuda.

She added: "Bermudians and family members will naturally be concerned about loved ones who may be stranded in the US.

"Efforts are being made to provide assistance and information through the department of tourism office in the US."

She urged people to stay calm. She expressed support and sympathy to "families of US citizens and other nationals who have lost loved ones in the horrific events of today."

Eugene Cox, asked about the potential effect of the disasters on the reinsurance industry would not comment, saying he was awaiting more information.
