No glamour in magaziine's advice
Glamour magazine containing potentially fatal advice to women.
In a brief article for pregnant women on preventing yeast infections, Glamour states chief of gynaecology at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Eva Arkin, suggests taking boric acid baths or "you can take 500-mg boric acid tablets...three times a day with meals''.
But boric acid tablets should not be ingested, a magazine spokesman later said, adding that the article should have "specified that boric acid capsules should be inserted vaginally three times a day''.
Head pathologist at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Dr. Keith Cunningham, said: "If you take something like boric acid by mistake, it is toxic. It is like drinking down vinegar. It throws the whole body system off balance.'' Glamour also sent out a fax earlier this week to magazine distributors, including those in Bermuda, ordering all copies be removed from store shelves.
Manager of Magazine Distributors, which serves the Phoenix stores, Mrs.
Loretta Bean, said the magazine's June issue was withdrawn from distribution throughout the Island.
But she said about 94 of the 300 magazines which came in about two weeks ago have already been sold.
And based on reports from other retailers, at least 100 copies of the magazine were snatched up by readers.
Floor manager at People's Pharmacy Mrs. Aleathea Todd said about 24 copies of Glamour's June issue were sold before the business on Victoria Street was aware of the error.
"There was only about two left when we heard about it on Monday,'' she said.
"We've given those back to the distributors and we won't be putting anymore out.'' But some store managers said rather than pulling the magazines from the shelves, they opted to remove page 64 which contains the erroneous advice.
Manager at The Book Rack Ltd. Mr. Shawn Smith said: "We took the page out of the magazine ourself when we learned of the error''.
Mr. Smith said the store on Burnaby Street had sold some copies before learning about the error, but he did not know how many.
Hamilton Pharmacy manager Mr. Paul DeSousa said that store also removed the "page in question'' from the magazine which just went on sale Wednesday at the pharmacy.
"We had sold only one copy to the best of my knowledge,'' he said, adding that he had not yet seen the magazine sales.
But Mr. DeSousa added: "As far as we can determine, I don't know of any sources which sell the (boric acid) tablets in Bermuda.
And owner of Down To Earth health store on Reid Street Ms Marlyn Eastmond she is aware that boric acid is sold in powder form at some pharmacies.
But she said: "It's absolutely not sold here. It's poisonous. I would recommend that it be used as an ant killer.''
