A large quantity of light diesel oil sheen was seen on the surface of the water, but officers were able to clear the fuel with dispersants.

Inquiries revealed that the spill was probably caused earlier in the day when a boat was being fuelled at the nearby marina. No environmental damage is likely to result, although Police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.

Marine Police are also investigating a report that an 11-foot Boston Whaler was deliberately sunk while chained to its mooring in Hamilton Harbour on Sunday evening.
