Swimmers brave high winds to help elderly

Swimmers, old and young, male and female, and a dog swam distances of 10, 7.5, 4 and 2 kilometres, around Harrington Sound.

Sound Swimathon.

Swimmers, old and young, male and female, and a dog swam distances of 10, 7.5, 4 and 2 kilometres, around Harrington Sound.

They braved rain squalls and high winds, with some waves, to complete the course and raise cash the Pembroke Parish Rest Home.

Organiser Mr. Reeve Trott was delighted with the result. He said: "It was a great event. Only 10 of the 170 people who promised they would swim failed to turn up. Everything went like clockwork.

"The only problems we had were a couple of cases of cramp and one cut foot, but I must praise the rescue boats and kayaks who were always on hand to help out.'' Mr. Trott swam the 10 kilometre event himself and said that the weather was generally good but there were some problems for the longer distance swimmers.

His Golden Retriever, Breech Block completed the 4k event although he swam under the bridge at the finish to confuse the judges.

A number of old folk from the Pembroke Home turned up to watch the Swimathon and were introduced to Breech Block afterwards.

Kevin Insley recorded the fastest time for the 10 km race with two hours, 22 minutes and 39 seconds. The fastest woman was Annette Bosch in a time of two hours, 41 minutes and 35 seconds.
