Champs in for a battle
Croix look like providing defending champions Greg and Mary Hopkins and Brett Forgesson with their toughest challenge in tomorrow's Bermuda Team Triathlon at the US Naval Annex (3 p.m.).
There are 66 teams in the open category and 141 overall for the event, which includes a one-mile swim, 15-mile ride and six-mile run.
Greg Hopkins, who is also the defending champion in the individual triathlon, was part of this three-member team that set a new record last year when they won in one hour, 28 minutes and 57 seconds.
And while that record may stand for another year the overall title could change hands as Insley, Perry and de Ste Croix look to be the main contenders, followed by Ian Raynor, Earl Godfrey and Steven Caines and the team of Errol Cormack, Steven Doyling and Amanda Smith.
The strength of each team is determined by its weakest link, as was the case last year when Insley was first out of the water last year in 21 minutes but neither of his then team-mates, cyclist Carlos DeSilva and runner Richard Bruton, could manage to finish in the top 10 in their events.
This year Insley has two competitive colleages in Perry, who warmed up for the running season earlier this month by winning the Labour Day race, and de Ste Croix. They were third and fifth in their events last year.
There is a nice mixture of youth and experience in the team of cyclist Jeff Payne, runner Eddie Davies and swimmer Tiffany Gosling.
DeSilva will do the riding in his team, which now includes Stanley Harris in the swim and Newton Adcock in the run.
The trio of Huw Morris, Clark Tear and Tracy Wright, representing Agricultural, Fisheries and Parks, are the favourites in the company category where there are 33 entries. Morris, Tear and Wright were second across the line in 1991 with Wright the fastest runner in 30:43 and Tear the fourth fastest cyclist.
There is also competition in the women's category where there are 19 teams, family (eight entries), masters women (five entries) and masters men (seven entries). There are two junior boys teams and one junior girls team for a total of 141.
The event is sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda and the prize presentation will take place at the end at 6 p.m. with representatives from both the bank and the US Navy presenting the prizes.
