Frustrated members of the St. George?s Club are hoping new Tourism Minister Ewart Brown will finally update the Island?s timeshare laws.

The club members have tried unsuccessfully since the mid-1990?s to make progress on revising the laws ? which they say favour developers ? under previous Tourism Ministers David Dodwell, David Allen and Renee Webb. Mr. Dodwell set up a working group to look at amending the legislation in the mid-1990s but was voted out of office in 1998 before any change could be made.

A group of members at St. George?s Club led by John Vossler, say they have had no success under the Progressive Labour Party when they have sought to get the law rewritten.

But Mr. Vossler is hopeful Dr. Brown can finally usher in the changes in the coming parliament.

In a letter to the new Minister, Mr. Vossler writes: ?Our primary thrust has been in seeking the complete review and rewrite of the 1981 Timeshare Act and companion Club Rules and Regulations.

?Our intent is to seek a ?level playing field? for the owner-investor membership at the club. Such has not been available to the membership since 1981, basically due to the ?tilting? of the original legislation towards the role of the developer over time.

?We are hopeful that your good offices will accomplish the corrective mission so desperately needed during the current session of parliament. We strongly believe that corrective action, now, will go a long ways towards ?righting the tourism ship?.?

In July, Ms Webb told the group by e-mail that changes to the Timeshare Act are currently with the Attorney General?s Chambers for drafting before going to the House of Assembly.
